Starting into my first homeschool conference was extremely daunting. My mom had discussed with me about different languages to learn and I couldn't even imagine how I could wrap my brain around a new language led alone speak one.  Sitting in the ASL lecture it seemed the most comfortable as I have some ASL experience. Upon walking into the conference room at the homeschool convention, there was this tall guy in the front of the room who was super funny, easy to listen to, and a natural conversationalist. As he went through the presentation I knew he would be perfect as my foreign language instructor. Signing up for ASL has been perfect for me. After completing one year with Mr. Larry I can safely say that Mr. Larry is the best sign language teacher out there! From being goofy and joking to slowing down to help me fix my parameters - Mr. Larry has been such a great instructor. I've enjoyed learning from him. I definitely feel that ASL is the second language for me. If you are remotely thinking about trying his classes I implore you to give it a try! I promise you won't come away empty handed. -Jeremiah- Homeschool Student

ASL1 at The American Sign Language Center was just what I was looking for this last year! I first witnessed Larry’s teaching abilities at a homeschool convention workshop over a year ago. I quickly signed up my two sons to take ASL1 with him for the fall as they were both struggling with getting through an in-person Spanish 1 class. I couldn't have been happier. My sons did not dread taking the class and started looking forward to it every week. The concepts came quickly to them as they are both visual learners. Larry has a remarkable way of being down-to-earth, funny, practical, and very knowledgeable about his subject matter. Hence, I will definitely be signing my two boys up for his ASL2 class, and maybe eventually his ASL3.   -Renee- Parent

I just completed ASL 1 with Mr. Larry and let me tell you- this man is fun, goofy, knows what he's talking about, and is an excellent teacher! I have learned the ability to discern when to joke around verses being serious in learning a new language. The way he teaches is easy to understand and makes you feel as though you can learn the materials! I loved ASL 1 and can't wait for ASL 2! -Josiah- Homeschool Student

I started ASL1 last year and have enjoyed it immensely ever since. Before taking ASL I did one whole year of Spanish and hated it immensely. I am dyslexic and have had trouble with learning a foreign language, especially the verb tenses and pronouns. It was my low point every week last year. I am extremely happy that my mom decided to switch us to ASL. It has been one of the best decisions of my high school years. I have had a lot of fun being able to learn ASL. I have found that it is a lot easier than Spanish due to not having to worry about all of the different verb tenses and pronouns. The teacher is extremely nice and is always willing to help. He has a wonderful sense of humor which lightens the class. He is an amazing teacher and I am happy to be his student. I have also found that I don't struggle with the homework assignments because they are very easy to follow. I also love that if you can't remember a sign from the teaching, he has little videos that go over all of the signs that we have learned from that lesson. I also appreciate that he teaches us through signing and you have to pay attention to what he is doing throughout the class. I am extremely excited to do ASL 2 with him in the near future.  -Caleb- Homeschool Student

“I highly recommended Larry for teaching ASL. He was my ASL class’s online teacher and I was Larry’s teaching assistant. I watched him. His signing skills are superior. He is good with students. He has a good relationship with the high school students. My students enjoyed learning from him. If you have any questions, please text me 5125738142.” -Debra Garner- Deaf ASL Teacher at Coppell High School, Tx

My name is Zac and I am taking Larry’s class, ASL 1. Last year I took Spanish 1 and it was very hard for me to learn because of all the different pronouns and such, but this year we tried ASL and it was great. I could pick it up easier and the teacher was excellent. The teacher really does make the class. His humor and his kind attitude are enjoyable and it really makes the class more fun. ASL is nice because Larry goes through step by step to help you memorize the signs correctly. I would always dread having to do Spanish because it was so daunting, but now I look forward to our ASL class each week.  -Zac-Homeschool Student

“I have developed a working relationship and friendship with Larry over the years.  He was one of my interpreters for college course work.  His command of ASL is excellent.  He teamed well with the other interpreter to ensure I had full access to the information being delivered in the class.  Larry was flexible and easy to work with. Larry has been a Group Leader at Deaf Camp for many years where my son and daughter attend. His roles are many:  Group leader, interpreter, and song leader-to name a few.  He was my group leader for a year and I worked with him the following year as I took over his group while Larry was trained to be the Activities Coordinator at camp. Larry’s ASL is near native to native.  Deaf people who meet him for the first time think he is Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or CODA.  He is involved with the Deaf community outside of Deaf Camp, socializes with Deaf people, and advocates for the Deaf. While I have never seen Larry teach ASL, I know his skills as a leader and informal teacher.  Formerly, I taught ASL 1 at IUPUI and he contacted me with some questions and concerns while teaching ASL at Ivy Tech.  He is dependable, trustworthy, and will do what is necessary to excel at his position as an ASL teacher.” -Dwight Cassler- Former Deaf ASL Instructor at IUPUI

“Larry helped me so much with a school project. My fluency improved a lot and I got an A on the assignment!” -Evan G.- Senior at Bloomington High School North

“The American Sign Lagnuage Center in an excellent program for learning ASL at home. My daughter is homeschooled and was passionate about learning ASL as her foreign language for high school credit. The program started with the basics, such as the alphabet and greetings, and became more in-depth as the year progressed. It is easy to understand and learn ASL with this program and it gives plenty of instruction for reviewing what has been learned in each lesson. She has enjoyed learning ASL and is getting more proficient. I would recommend this program to other homeschool families or to anyone who needs/wants to learn to sign ASL.” -Janel- Parent

“I am using the American Sign Language Center, along with another program, to facilitate an ASL class at our local homeschool co-op. The students love learning ASL! They have learned to sign quickly and easily and enjoy signing with each other. The program is easy to understand and teaches them in a kid friendly manner. They have enjoyed interacting and learning with Mr. Larry.” -Homeschool Co-op -Teacher

“The American Sign Language Center has an awesome program. It helped me learn ASL confidently, knowing that I could become good at signing. It is good for both young and old and “older” students. Even adults can learn. My mom loves learning ASL with me. It is great for bonding with your kid. Communicating with littles, who can also learn some signs, is a plus. Your child may have a kid that is deaf or hard of hearing someday, get a job with a deaf co-worker or get a job as an interpreter. It can be a big help in the future to know ASL. As a student I highly recommend the Americna Sign Language Center with Mr. Larry Leonard.” -Jaila- Homeschool Junior

“Sign Language class is one of the highlights of my week. I appreciate that Larry teaches us informal as well as formal signs. I love learning new words and I am learning grammar as well, which I am really excited about. Larry is good about correcting our signs if needed and encourages us to practice and grow. It's easy to ask questions in class and Larry is comical sometimes. I highly recommend his classes! Cheers!” -Lela- Adult Online Community ASL I class

“Larry is an excellent instructor of ASL. Before I reached out to him, I had a 58% (F) in my ASL II class. After 8 weeks of tutoring, I am now up to an 86% (B) in the class. It is evident that Larry has years of experience in teaching ASL and works with his students to get the most out of each lesson. I graduate college in May of 2023, and I don’ t think I would have made it through without Larry.” -Jeremiah O’Connor- ASL II student at IUPUI

“I throughly enjoyed and appreciated working with Larry to support my son’s language development. Larry is creative in his approach to teach in a way that is relatable. He understood how to motivate my son to encourage expressive communication while also teaching me at the same time.” -Jacquline C.- Mom

I am not an elegant writer. This will be a letter of reference from the heart, the heart of my entire family. Our journey with Larry started around 23 years ago when my 3rd born son was 3 years old. We had sat in neurologist offices and pediatrician offices and no one could help us. We were told time and time again our son would not be able to speak like a “normal” child and probably not be able to be independent. That was unacceptable to my husband and I and we refused to believe it. My first thought was I need to give my son a way to communicate to ease his frustration (and ours). I contacted the Indiana School for the Deaf to ask for advice. They were helpful even though our son was hearing they understood the frustration and gave me Larry’s phone number. That phone number forever changed the course of my son’s life. The day we met Larry he gave my son the ability to ask for “more” and with his ability to communicate that single word came an intense craving for more. Within a month my son was signing and communicating and if he wasn’t given a sign for a word he would make up his own signs. Larry fed him sign language in preschool and we would speak while signing. Before you knew it Andy was starting to put words together and speaking more than just blabbering. The blessing of language was a blessing Andy almost didn’t receive. No Doctor could believe what was taking place. Time moved forward and so did Larry and Andy. I could write a book on this relationship but I will fast forward. Thanks to Larry, Andy speaks and you would never know he had a problem. Andrew graduated High School (not in special education classes), graduated from Vincennes University and is a Welder for the Local 20. Larry has had such a substantial impact on our family it is beyond explanation. I think one of the most telling examples of how much Larry means to my son and our family is Larry was one of Andrews groomsman. Larry will forever be part of our lives with every word Andy speaks, and now to see Andy teaching his little son to speak. Few people cross our paths that have the love and caring in their heart as Larry. Our family is eternally grateful for Larry. We welcome your questions.” 812-825-4485; anitamsciscoe@gmail.com -The Sciscoe Family- Glenn, Anita, David, Joey, Andy, Noah and Levi

“I am a former teacher myself, 30 years of experience with all ages, and I know a good teacher when I see one.  I was Larry’s student for several semesters at IVY Tech Community College.  My audiologist recommended I study some ASL in case my hearing loss progressed further.  I had taken some community adult ed classes, but they were not in depth enough, so one of those teachers highly recommended I go to IVY Tech.  I am so glad I took his advice!  Larry’s classes were well thought out, and easy to follow, even though no speaking was allowed in class!  He made sure we all had a chance to practice with our classmates, and with him as well.  And sometimes near the end of class, if he had a moment, he would entertain us by signing to a well-known song. That was so much fun, and we left class smiling.  In the second level ASL class, we had the opportunity to do a short presentation in front of  the entire class.  That was immensely helpful as it made us think in ASL syntax, not English syntax. He also made sure we knew about events at the Indiana Deaf School so we could immerse ourselves in the Deaf experience, and practice with signers outside of class.  Eventually, when I moved to upper levels  of ASL at the school, I had different teachers, but as good as they were, Larry was the best one for me.  I was in my 60’s at the time, and being in a class with young college students was daunting at first, but Larry made me feel welcome and competent.  I feel lucky and honored to have had him as an ASL instructor.”  -Beth E.- Ivy Tech student

“I truly enjoy the Community ASL 1 and 2 classes. It has been a blessing to learn from Larry. These classes are well prepared and are taught with a passion.  Each week builds on the other. Of course, there are times in learning that you think you are not, but then the next week I find I learned a lot.  Larry is a patient, and helpful teacher.  He takes the time to teach you right and to make sure you get it. Even if he has to show you more than once.  Larry has a passion for the ASL language and the deaf community.  We are blessed to have him offer these classes and allow us to learn.  If you are thinking about taking the course, do it. You will not be disappointed! Thank you for all you do Larry!” -Becky- Community ASL Class
